What do you mean by "digital"?

The phrase "digital humanities" is used to cover a wide array of practices and projects.  In some ways, I prefer the older term "humanities computing," as it emphasizes process over display. Pedagogically and scholastically, I tend to see the field as skill and tool-based: using machine languages and analytical tools from the social sciences to analyze materials traditionally associated with the humanities.* My work as a whole focuses on the historical context that produces cultural objects, such as novels. As such, my book and digital projects are interested in trade routes and communication networks as much as they are with the themes and structure of a text.
